On June 13, Duology Films officially announced Peril on the Canvas, the forthcoming psychological horror feature written, directed by, and starring Zach Colmenero. The announcement was made via Colmenero’s Instagram, where the filmmaker revealed the chilling concept: a “painting horror” in which a young artist accidentally unleashes a dangerous entity while experimenting with blindfolded painting.

Set in the fictional modern-day town of Jordan, Texas, the film explores the eerie consequences of a growing artistic trend. Early teasers—framed as a leaked 911 transcript from the Jordan Police Department—hint at an unsettling pattern of painters vanishing or dying under mysterious circumstances tied to the phenomenon.

Colmenero leads the project in the role of Colin Vander. Joining him in supporting roles are actors Aiden McLain and Xander Keller, whose character details remain under wraps.

In addition to acting, McLain will also serve as the film’s director of photography. The film is being produced by Duology co-founder Osaimeen Yoosuff, who previously co-wrote Colmenero’s acclaimed drama short The Art of Unbecoming.

Colmenero describes Peril on the Canvas as “a mix of the visual language of Longlegs, the unraveling story techniques of Hereditary, and the disturbing parts of Talk to Me—with a painting twist.”

Though Peril marks a turn from his previous dramatic work, Colmenero shares that the horror feature has long been in development. “I was developing [Peril on the Canvas] before The Art of Unbecoming even went into production,” he says. “It’s a big passion project for me, and I’m extremely proud of how the story flows in this film. I want to keep myself open with the projects I create.”

PERIL ON THE CANVAS begins crowdfunding on Kickstarter starting June 22, 2025.
